Keeping your pet safe in Winter
St. Louis Winters are significantly unpredictable. We go from a relatively warm fall to seven degrees below zero and a little over a week later we are at 69 degrees. These dramatic temperature swings are very stressful on our pets as well as on us. It is imperative that your pets not be left exposed to severely low temperatures and chill factors. They should be provided with fresh unfrozen water at all times and good quality food. If they spend any significant time in the lower temperatures they will lose heat (calories) to the environment and should therefore receive extra food. Pets going outside for bathroom duties should stay out only long enough to take care of business if the temperature and chill factor is in the teens. Somewhat longer times are OK if the temperature is in the twenties and they are active such as on a walk. In either case it is IMPERATIVE that you observe them for shivering, limping, carrying a leg and any other signs of discomfort. When walking your pet please avoid puddles that may contain ice melt chemicals, any obvious ice melt chemicals or any icy spots. If your pet has walked through any chemicals it is important to wipe their feet carefully with warm water and a small towel. If you have any concerns please call our office at (314)383-4677 and we will be happy to give you advice.
